DADDY’S GONE.

A country ballad.

Daddy’s Gone was performed by Kevin Gillan at the National Theatre in 1993 as part of the Scottish Youth Theatre performance 'Hard Rain', during the Lloyds Bank Theatre Challenge.

I was six then, the day that he came,

the man in the black uniform.

I knew something wasn’t the same,

and this was the start of the storm.

So I asked the man, ‘cause I didn’t understand,

why my daddy wasn’t home, just like he planned.

He said; “Sonny, your daddy is gone.

He won’t be back here again.

You are the man now, look after your mom

and don’t let her see you’re in pain.

Put away all those feelings you don’t understand

and soon it’ll all go as planned”.

Now it wasn’t the feelings I didn’t understand

I didn’t know what he meant.

So I asked my mommy what had gone wrong

and where my daddy went.

I asked my mom, ‘cause I didn’t understand,

why my daddy wasn’t home,

just like we’d planned.

She said; “Sonny your daddy is dead

because he was fighting for his family

but you can still see him inside your head

and I will still love him ‘cause he’s part of me.

Put away all those feelings you don’t understand

and soon it’ll all go as planned.”

So I grew up without him,

he died in the war,

but I still don’t know

where my daddy has gone.

So I looked deep inside me, ‘cause I didn’t understand

why my daddy wasn’t home,

just like we’d planned.

And I said; “People listen to me,

I have something important to say,

This piece of advice I pray you will see,

will help you in life on your way.

Don’t hide those feelings you don’t understand,

because nothing ever goes as planned.”
