Marriage (pair) (unfinished) Wood December 2008
A pair of abstract human forms hewn from a single block of aged oak. The two halves of this sculpture are "married" to each other through a series of small ridges intricately carved into to grain of the wood (these are difficult to see in these early "in process" photos). When properly displayed, each form interacts with the other's negative space creating an interactivity, a sight of energy, at the boundary between two wholes. This piece is free standing or wall mountable. Sadly, the pair remain unfinished despite many, many hours of carving and sanding, and sanding... and sanding, as I was unable to complete the sculpture while I had access to a studio. Now the raw, unfinished pieces - unprotected by oil, varnish or coating - seem, perhaps, to speak of the futile incompletion, that is the ongoing process of marriage to many.
