Album Cover One

Digitally altered photograph.

Heidelberg, Germany 2003

This was a very simple experiment with surprising results. The original photograph was of a sunset taken through a couple of house plants which were sitting on a window sill in the top flor apartment of a tower block in Heidelberg, Germany. I had just started playing with Photoshop and ran a couple of filters over the image and this is the result. I still like it even though it is simple and kind of cheesy in a 1969 Woodstock kind of way. I always thought it would make a great album cover. One thing that really interests me about this image is the horizon line. Not the purple squiggle in the middle where you would expect the horizon to be but the almost straight orange line about two thirds of the way up. I have not measured it precisely but I bet its close the Golden Mean of the image. If it is not, then I should crop it until it is as I find this artificial horizon the most visually magnetic part of this image. It provides a depth which in turn suggests a distance, a future; something that is beyond the here and now.

Shoe.

Digitally altered photograph from cell phone.

Heidelberg, Germany 2003

Here again a chance shot produces an interesting picture. I did not actually take this photograph, in fact that is my shoe on the far right of the frame. It was taken on my cell phone by my friend Simone who is wearing the shoe. There is a little bit of Photoshopping here but not much. I like the composition and depth of this photo and the contrast between the hard stones in the background with the long straight shadow on top and organic curves of the shoe itself. There us obviously something quite urban about the image but there is also a solemnity, a sadness which is not evident to my eye in the original color image.

North Pole

Photograph (Not enhanced)

This has got to be one of the best photos I have ever taken. It is certainly one of my favorites. Sure it's not the greatest photo in the world but it makes me happy when I look at it. The photograph was taken from deck 14 of P&O's MV Aurora cruise ship in summer of 2005. It was taken with a FujiFilm disposable 35mm camera. The location of the shot is somewhere near 82°N 11°E, those figures might not be exact but its somewhere around there. A direct quote from the captain of the Aurora at the time was "It's as far North as you can go, without dogs." The ship had turned North out of the port of Ny Ålesund (78°56'N 11°56'W) which, for me, is one of holiest places in the world.
