Digitally altered photograph.

Heidelberg, Germany 2003

This was a very simple experiment with surprising results. The original imageevening is a sunset photographed through an artificial frame; a couple of house plants sitting on a windowsill in a top floor apartment in Heidelberg, Germany. I had just started playing with Photoshop3.0 at this time. I cropped a little and ran a couple of filters over the image and this is the result. I like this image, it is simple and cheesy in a Timothy Leary kind of way. I still think it will make a great album cover. The element that stands out most for me in this image is the horizon line. Not the purple squiggle in the middle where you would expect the horizon to be but the almost straight orange line about two thirds of the way up. I have not measured it precisely but I would estimate that its close the Golden Mean of the image. If it is not, then I should crop it until it is, as I find this artificial horizon the most alluring, most visually magnetic part of this image. It provides a depth which in turn suggests a distance, a future; something that is beyond the here and now.

Heidelberg, Germany 2003

Here again a chance shot produces an interesting picture. I did not actually take this photograph, in fact that is my shoe on the far right of the frame. It was taken on my Nokia 6600 cell phone by my friend Simone whose shoe is the main subject. I did a little bit of Photoshopping on the image but not much. I find the composition and depth of this photo appealing. The contrast between the hard stones in the background, the long, straight shadow and the organic curves of the shoe itself make a bold statement that projects an inherant urban-ness about the image. There is, however, also a solemnity, a sadness which is not evident to my eye in the original color image.

Raw Photograph

(Not enhanced)

This is one of my favorite photos I have ever taken. It was taken with a FujiFilm disposable 35mm camera. Sure it's not the greatest photo in the world but it makes me happy when I look at it. The image was photographed from deck 14 of P&O's MV Aurora cruise ship in summer of 2005 after the ship had turned North out of the port of Ny Ålesund (78°56'N 11°56'E). The location of the shot is somewhere near 82°N 11°E, those figures might not be exact but its somewhere around there. A direct quote from the captain of the Aurora at the time was "It's as far North as you can go without dogs." It is one of holiest places on the planet.
